Characteristics of a good sewing needle

A decent sewing needle has the following characteristics:

  • A smooth eye is required to prevent the thread fraying or splitting.
  • A strong tip ensures that it can penetrate the fabric smoothly.
  • A certain degree of elasticity allows for the needle to bear weight without breaking or damaging the garment.

Sewing needles date back over 25,000 years where they were crafted from bones, antlers and ivory. The first metal needles came about in Moorish Spain in the 11th Century but the technology did not arrive in Western Europe until the 17th Century. Two hundred years later, the town of Redditch in Central England became the center of the world’s needle production.

Modern needles are generally made from stainless steel, and are clean, light and durable. We have a wide range of knitting needles and everything else you need to craft wonderful garments.
