Learn how to knit in 4 steps

Are you a lifelong crocheters with a yearning for needles, or a crafting newbie who wants to learn? We have a series of video tutorials that will help you learn how to knit!

Hello, newbie knitters and people who need a refresher course: we're here to help you

Learn to knit!

This short series of videos will get you on the road to knitting something new. Whether you're a beginner or someone returning to the craft, we hope these videos will help you out.

Step one: learn to cast on

Nothing can happen until you cast on, so let's get started! While there are many different ways to cast on, the long-tail cast on is the most popular and widely used for a variety of patterns. It's the best one to learn when starting out!

Step two: learn to do the knit stitch

The knit stitch is required for almost every pattern, so it's safe to say that it's a necessary skill when learning how to knit. Some say that it's the easiest stitch, but that's up to you to decide.

Step three: learn to do the purl stitch

While some projects can be made only using the knit stitch, like when you knit in the round or knit every row to create a garter stitch texture, the purl stitch is the knit stitch's counterpart. You'll need it to knit the popular stocking (or stockinette) stitch that has a smooth finished look.

Step four: learn to cast off

At the end of every project, you need to "cast off," or bind off, all of the stitches. While there are many ways to do this, this cast off method is the most popular and versatile for beginner knitters. Nearly all cast off techniques are variants on this method.
